Bulging Vs. Herniated Disc: Assessment and Treatment

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the basics and differences between bulging discs and herniated discs. While both these issues impact the discs in the spine, as their names indicate, they have some key differences and should not be simply considered the same thing by anyone who is dealing with them.

At Peterson Chiropractic, we’re here to offer the best car accident chiropractic services in Salt Lake City and other parts of Utah, covering not only whiplash injuries, but also any others that arise – and disc problems are often on this list. Today’s part two of our series will shift gears and look at how our chiropractors will go about assessing disc injuries to determine which of these issues is present, plus how both of these are treated within a chiropractic setting.

Chiropractic Assessment

For any kind of believed disc injury following a vehicle accident, a chiropractor will typically begin with an examination to determine the cause of any pain and discomfort. This may include some or all of the following:

  • Basic physical exam: This will involve looking at posture, range of motion and any potential weaknesses.
  • X-rays: To get an idea of the state of the spine and detect any kind of bone misalignment or fractures
  • MRI scans: To assess the condition of soft tissues like the discs in question without resorting to surgery.

Once these assessments have been carried out, a chiropractor will then be able to determine if any kind of disc injury is present – either bulging or herniated discs – and start the proper treatment plan.

Chiropractic Treatment for Bulging and Herniated Discs

Once the injury has been identified as either a bulging disk or herniated disc, treatment may vary slightly depending on which issue you’re dealing with and how severe it is. Many of the same treatments may be used to treat both issues, though.

These include:

  • Manual spinal manipulation to help improve range of motion, reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  • Soft tissue treatment such as massage and therapeutic exercises.
  • Postural corrections and lifestyle advice like posture changes or taking breaks from certain activities that could aggravate the injury.
  • Electrical stimulation to reduce pain and encourage the healing process.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises to help support the spine and improve flexibility.

The goal of any chiropractic treatment for disc issues is to relieve pain, restore movement and promote long-term health. With the right approach, most people can see a marked improvement in their symptoms and quality of life.
